The electronic certificate and / or the electronic DNI contain some cryptographic keys that are the necessary elements to sign electronically.
Its mission is to validate and certify that an electronic signature corresponds to a natural person, legal entity or community without legal personality. It contains all the necessary information to sign documents electronically and identify its owner with his data: name, NIF, algorithm and signature keys, expiration date and issuing body.
Certification Authorities (AC)
A Certification Authority is a trusted entity, responsible for issuing and revoking the digital or electronic certificates used in the electronic signature.
The Certification Authority certifies that the electronic signature corresponds to a specific user. That is the reason why the certificates are signed, in turn, by the Certification Authority.
Procedure for obtaining a digital certificate
Obtaining the Digital Certificate depends on whether the certificate is contained in a card, such as the DNIe, or whether the certificate is stored in a software file.
In both processes there is a common step: the identification of the responsible or user of the certificate. This requires that the applicant come to the offices of a Registration Authority. The functions of these offices is to corroborate the identity of the user.
- Obtaining Certificate on card (DNIe).
- The certificates contained in cards must be delivered directly to the user.
- In the specific case of the DNIe, you must go to the offices of the General Directorate of Police, which is the Certifying Authority. More information in Electronic ID .
- Application for software certificate.
- The application and download of the Certificate are made from the browser.
Important Note: the same browser must be used throughout the process, from the request to the final download of the certificate.
If a signed document is received, it is important to validate the signature, that is, to verify that the signed data corresponds to the originals, that the certificate with which it was signed is valid and that the structure of the file is correct. This process can be done through VALIDe .
How can I verify a signed document or know if a signature is valid?
- Law 23/2015, of July 21, Computer of the Labor and Social Security Inspection System .
- Order ESS / 1452/2016 by which the model of action diligence of the Labor and Social Security Inspectorate is regulated.
Renewal of the Certificate
The electronic Certificates have a period of validity. Each Certification Provider establishes deadlines before the certificate expires in order to renew it.For example: The Certificates included in the ID card are valid for 30 months (although the ID card can be valid for up to 10 years depending on the age of the person).
Revocation of a Certificate
A Certificate can be invalidated before it expires due to security reasons, the end of the entity represented.
Once revoked, the certificate can no longer be reactivated and it is necessary to restart the entire application process. To revoke the Certificates, it must be the Certification Authority itself that provides the procedure, which is normally published on its website.
